Wonderland wasn't always this way. There was a time when it mirrored medieval England, albeit with a few magical elements: a few quirks and eccentricities that made it truly unique. While all feared the Queen's mercurial temper and the fine blade of her Guillotine, all was well, until a little girl named Alice Liddell disturbed the status quo and sparked a revolution. The kingdom began to fall into decay as the taint of the modern world invaded. History is beginning to repeat itself and no one is happy. As the Queen of Hearts tangles in a battle of wits and riddles with the Cheshire Cat, the rest are starting to wonder ... is it true that the White Rabbit is bringing humans to Wonderland when they themselves are banned from going to London?

QUOTE/LYRICS: There's a humming in the restless summer air
And we're slipping off the course that we prepared
But in all chaos, there is calculation
Dropping glasses just to hear them break
You've been drinking like the world was gonna end (it didn't)
Took a shiner from the fist of your best friend (go figure)
It's clear that someone's gotta go
We mean it but I promise we're not mean

He had recently seen Fintan. Of course, the endeavour took a while, after all, Max had to get himself up to speed with happenings in London. Supposedly, it had evolved even more, the technology taking over vastly and quickly. In just a few Wonderland years, he heard of London moving on from something very similar to Wonderland to something completely different and he was entranced by it. He longed for London and the normality of it, how familiar it felt to him. But he had things to take care of here, affairs that he had to keep a handle on before they’ve gone out of control.

That was the reason why he was in the Caterpillar’s forest now, waiting on him and giving him the benefit of the doubt as he did so. It seemed that Qaseem wasn’t all that bothered about timekeeping. Or perhaps it was on Maixent. He wasn’t sure. However, as distribution was largely down to him, as Max had other things to take care of, he would wait.

Maixent didn’t seem to mind that the weather was not a leather coat weather by far, stubbornly sat in the palace gardens wearing it. Reaching to one of its many pockets, he took an open packet of cigarettes out and lit one up. He still missed London, terribly so but no matter how he tried to address the subject, Jacqueline remained unmoved. He tried to present it to her as a possibility of growth – London continued changing while Wonderland seemed to be at an eternal standstill. Well, there were some differences to what it used to be – for instance, before Alice, he wouldn’t have been able to get a burger and fries here.

He continued to smoke. The day around him was hot, the weather unforgiving but still he sat, longing for the pouring rain of London again. There was nothing he could do about it but he refused to acknowledge it.

Wonderland has always been... quite the problematic place. For Maixent, he never really felt like he belonged there, often feeling disconnected and as though he was born in a completely wrong era and while it was home to him, there were times when he felt as though he was trapped there. Discovering the existence of London was almost like a blessing and he was one of the first ones to go through the Looking Glass, saying he wanted to “pay his respects to Alice” while in fact, he went on to discover more about that magical place. But he had his own obligations. And the fact that he was King meant that he had to support his wife, whether he agreed with her or not.

You supposed that you were better off than some. After all, some people didn’t have parents and you did – you had a mother and a father. They were both quite intelligent, your mother more so. She was the one that taught you to read and write, after all. Something that proved of most importance later on in your life, but first things first.

You heard the word “mercenary” in relation to your family at the age of five and you didn’t understand what it meant. While asked, your mother sighed and rolled her eyes; she didn’t like it when you listened in on conversations. You weren’t supposed to know but it ended up becoming a privilege. Soon, you were taught what the word meant in practice and were able to handle a bow pretty well after a few years of intense training. It turned out that your father had plenty of skills to teach you, too, and he taught you how to fight with a sword, a dagger and just your fists. You need to be able to protect yourself, he would say, you need to be tough. So tough you were...

You killed your first human when you were thirteen.

There was a feeling of elation as you saw the life leave the eyes of a man older than you by a good ten years. It was an accomplishment to be proud off. It was a clean kill and once you closed his eyes, he looked as though he was sleeping, if it wasn’t for the fact that he was quickly growing cold.

“I don’t like it here.”

It was one of those long afternoons, the sun was shining and you hid in the shadow of a big tree, the branches protecting your face from getting sunburnt. She was only a few months younger than you and yet, she seemed so innocent. You brushed a hand through your hair and looked to your lap, where your dagger sat. You felt sorry for her, you were hardly an entrepreneur but it seemed like she was the only friend that you were capable of having.

You shrugged and rested back against the tree. You never really dwelled on it; it was just this vague feeling of being born in the completely wrong place, in the completely wrong time. Maybe it had something to do with your upbringing? Who knew. You certainly didn’t.

“I don’t know, I just don’t.”

You never really spoke to Alice yourself but you’ve heard enough. The stories of a completely different world that seemed nonsense made absolute sense to you and it sounded as though it was where you were supposed to be. The ‘real’ word, a proper world. Somewhere you wished to be.

And too soon, your wish was granted – with Alice’s death, portals opened and you were free to move between Wonderland and London; you are amongst the first to take advantage of that fact, very curious about this world that you’ve heard so much about.

From what you learnt, there are many similarities between London and Wonderland... but the lack of magic made it all the more magical and intriguing.

When you finally returned to Wonderland, you were greeted by a change in rulers and you smiled to yourself; Jacqueline was really a much better choice. You were always much more drawn towards the younger of the two, the older seeming to be almost like a doll.

If your parents taught you anything, it was to succeed. To work hard and succeed, to kill the right people, make shortcuts and rise to power. Finally, your efforts were recognised and you were appointed a personal advisor for the Queen of Hearts herself.

The connection was almost instant. There was just something in her eyes when you grin and crack a joke, thankfully she had exactly the same kind of humour that you did; otherwise you were sure there would be consequences. But she was exactly how you imagined her and it helped that you had a set of parents who worked hard for you to become who you were. You hoped they would be proud.

You weren’t exactly sure what happened first – a confession or sharing a night, but you found yourself climbing over people once again, stepping on their feet as you were made King and married Jacqueline.

The victory was sweetened by the fact she decided to take your name.

You were never a big game player so when you spotted the first signs of a game between Jacqueline and the Cat, you withdrew and decided to focus on your own responsibilities. While taking care of the Card deck took a fair bit of your time, you realised you missed London and up until the portals were shut, you would slip out just so that you had time to breathe. And while Wonderland stayed mostly the same, things in London changed; it became different, more... advanced. Your heart still longed to be there, to live there but now, you had a different agenda to focus on and really, kind of regretted being the King of Wonderland. There were quite a few things you didn’t agree on with Jacqueline but you didn’t make a show of it... Most of the time.

You were not made to rule and you realised that with every day that passed. And while you tried, you couldn’t be like them – all too robotic, something set completely apart from both you and your wife. Everybody wanted to rule the world and you were amongst the demographic but it turned out, that maybe you weren’t the best choice.

It was always about letting go of the past while acknowledging it formed you, but it seemed that blood thirst was difficult to curb; as you wound up on the palace balcony with blood on your hands. You’d gotten sloppy.

As you continued to miss London, you figured out a way of keeping yourself entertained, on top of the deck. Upon discovering exactly what impact you had on the White Rabbit, you decided to set up an underground market of all things London and while sometimes, you would be questioned if this is your way of trying to rid of the humans or the Wonderlanders similar to you, you would only raise an eyebrow. After all, you didn’t want to get yourself in trouble – so it was all kept hush hush.

Jacqueline knew all about it, of course.
